Christopher Newport was the first campus that launched a Cru movement in the Tidewater area.

Cru is a vibrant group of believers that is a caring community passionate about connecting people with Jesus Christ. Every Wednesday night in the Pope Chapel, you can be a part of nearly 100 college students worshipping God, laughing together, learning together from God’s Word, and discussing together how it impacts their day to day life. More importantly, you can see Cru in action through our numerous other activities and events happening every week. We have men’s and women’s small groups that meet every night of the week (so that at least one can fit your schedule). You can also be involved by being a part of the socials team, evangelism team, worldwide missions team, and prayer team. And the key to the success of this ministry has been the power of God working through students leading these activities and events. We have Cru staff that help disciple and coach the students, but everything is led by the students on campus. We also have a great time hanging out together on the weekends, plus going to many awesome Cru conferences, retreats, and missions’ trips.

HISTORY

CNU Cru started in the spring of 2009 when a group of 5 Christian students began meeting together. Then a team of Cru staff members arrived in the fall of 2009, and at our first fall meeting we had more than 30 student show up. We didn’t have much back then—just one worship song and a Bible. But those still are the backbones of our ministry. A ministry that’s devoted to knowing God and making His name known all over campus.

I think the best way that we would describe it is that when we showed up on campus, we just felt like God was already there, and we were just following in His footsteps.
